Description
1.0. Introduction and background
The complex and interconnected environmental, social, and economic components of development must be addressed to address the crucial global challenge of sustainable development. China has undergone enormous environmental, economic, and social changes in recent decades, including rapid urbanization, industrialization, and globalization. China is the world’s most populated country. The nation must overcome several obstacles to sustainable development, including environmental deterioration, social inequity, and economic expansion. So, it’s important to assess the success of measures meant to advance China’s sustainable development. Sustainable fisheries management policies are one such intervention to address the issues of overfishing, habitat loss, and illegal fishing activities that have compromised the sustainability of China’s fisheries and the maritime environment. The selected policy is “total allowable catch” (TAC) that refers to a fisheries management method that establishes a limit on the total number of fish that may be taken from a certain fishery during a specific time frame. It is a quota system intended to control fishing operations and guarantee the sustainable exploitation of fisheries resources. The total authorized catch (TAC) for a fishery is established under the TAC system based on scientific evaluations of the fishery’s population size, reproductive rates, and other ecological parameters. Individual quotas are then assigned to fishermen or fishing businesses based on criteria including ownership, vessel size, and history of fishing in order to distribute the TAC among fishing vessels.
